Description
‘My Sister, My Love” is a deeply disturbing masterpiece that will unsettle most viewers with its exploration into taboo territory. Ingmar Bergman’s protegee, Vilgot Sjöman (‘I Am Curious (Yellow)’) created this shocking drama based on the pre-Restoration tragedy ‘Tis A Pity She’s A Whore’.
A young nobleman (Per Oscarsson) returns home from France to find that his sister (Bibi Andersson) is engaged to be married to a local Baron. His fury and frustration results in a stolen kiss in the dark between siblings. This incestuous act is the spark that starts a conflagration. Soon his sister is found to be pregnant and the two must make a decision to continue with their forbidden dalliance or accede to what society deems to be proper. Bibi Andersson and Per Oscarsson are superb as the sister and brother involved in a turbulent relationship. Andersson’s performance ranks among her other great roles in such films as ‘Persona’ and ‘A Passion.’ Director Sjöman is at his best in depicting the alternating hate and love between these two while being relatively circumspect in portraying the physical relationship in order to better highlight their emotional turmoil.
